How to measure a yard for sod
Sketch the lawn in simple shapes and measure only the area that will receive grass.
Draw the area that will actually get grass
Sketch the lawn and mark beds, paving, the house, and anything that will not be sod. Split what remains into rectangles, triangles, or circles. The drawing does not have to be to scale if the measurements are labeled.
Calculate each section
- Rectangle: length times width.
- Triangle: base times height, divided by 2.
- Circle: 3.14 times radius times radius.
- Add the sections and subtract the areas that will not get turf. Stay in feet so the result is square feet.
Allow for the installation
Curves, cuts, and pallet sizes change the order. A rough sketch and photos are enough to start. We check the measurements, access, grade, and grass before anything is ordered. Mark wet spots on the sketch. Those areas may need drainage before they get sod.

Do I need exact measurements to ask for a quote?

Should a wet spot be included in the sod area?
