How to measure a yard for sod without over-ordering
A quick sketch, a few rectangles, and a waste allowance are enough to start a useful conversation about a sod project.
Break the lawn into rectangles, triangles, and circles rather than trying to measure the whole property at once. Multiply length by width for rectangles, then add the pieces together. For a circle, use 3.14 × radius × radius.
Measure the actual turf area, not the beds, driveway, house footprint, or play area. A simple overhead photo with the sections labeled is often more useful than one large number with no shape attached.
Add a small waste allowance for cuts and irregular edges. The right amount depends on the layout and the sod supplier’s pallet size. We confirm the final order after checking grade, access, and the grass that fits the light.
If the lawn has standing water or a low bowl, measure it—but do not order sod for it yet. Drainage and grade come first, or the new lawn will repeat the old problem.
